Don’t fall for Phishing Scams
Phishing scams are used by a criminal or hacker to trick you into giving them your information and identity by tricking you into believing they are someone else. These phishing attacks usually show up on an e-mail or a link in the e-mail.
Emails from friends can’t always be trusted
Many hackers will gain control of a friends email account and send out emails to everyone in their contact list.
These emails will look like they are from your friend or acquaintance but are really someone trying to do you harm and steal your identity and your money.
Sometimes there will just be a link in the email. If you click on the email, the link can automatically run a program in the background. These programs can run a wide range of processes, including taking control of your computer. Many will install Malware on your computer that can do various misdeeds, causing you and your identity harm.
One very popular tactic among hackers is to install a small program that will take control of your Internet Browser and display a page that claims to be from Microsoft. They say that Microsoft has found a virus or malware on your computer and gives a toll free number for you to call for help.
DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER ON THE SCREEN.
If you do, you will be connected to a hacker who is happy to take your credit card number and charge you as much as they can. By doing that, the are completing the first step in stealing your identity. They have your name, address, email address and credit card number. They will not fix the computer.
